You are right, this is not good to do backup on startup. We've
fixed it, AllMyNotes will do backup only when not active (no keyboard and mouse activity for some time) and not within first 5 minutes after program launch time. The fix will be available in all versions 3.41 and 4.07 (beta).
In the future we'll make backup process totally transparent (it will not freeze the program), but it will take some time to implement.

Why is it so big? Perahps you have huge file attachments inside? You can place them on your disk and put file hyperlinks to them rather then inserting within a note. This will speed up not opening time and backuping time as well.

You are right, the database engine is t pre-allocatin space in advance, this allows faster allocation and decreases overall file fragmentation.
