3.38 will not open

Good morning,

I just reinstalled v3_38, rebooted and cruised around task manager because

When I clicked on my DB  file nothing happened. When I click on the program icon and also the name in Start, happens. Almost. If I have task manager open, I can see that it's starting but then it disappears off task manager.

I expected AMN to power up to the .ddb file.  I'd had it open at home on my machine there, but here at the office, suddenly, nothing I do brings up the software.  Task manager shows it comes up and it's enabled at startup but then it goes off.  I don't know how to read the AMN log files to troubleshoot.

It's updated via dropbox, shows that the ddb file is updated. This has always worked in the past.

Is there some setting I can change to make it work today??

AMN loads and then quits

Suddenly, on the office machine, when I click the icon or the ddb file it appears to do nothing. I opened task Manager and can see that it starts running but then it quits and never arrives on my screen. I did not touch a setting...

Sooo I just reinstalled v3_38, rebooted and watched Task Manager. Same thing. AMN Starts up but then shuts down.

It works perfectly on my home machine.

please help!

Look for file named allmynotes.log, it should contain extended information on what's going on.

I can't get into the program to deal with the skin or a language error. I don't know what to do with these errors. Will search forum and FAQ

Uninstalled 3.38 entirely
Copied log and cnfg files from the machine at home on which it works
Downloaded and installed 3.39
It worked perfectly.
Saved as and shut it down
Clicked on filename and again, it opened perfectly.

No idea what the problem was but :D it seems to be fine!!


(yes, I did look at the log files but could not tell what to do about the error.)

It looks like file content of C:\Program Files\AllMyNotes Organizer\Skins\Holy Crown\SkinInfo.ini got filled with garbage. But it's not AllMyNotes - it doesn't saves to this file, only loads it. Perhaps it was some sort of disk error. Anyway, glad to know the reinstallation fixed the problem, I believe it will not happen anymore :)

I'm afraid, its a AMN 3.38/.39 strange "issue"(?), because log is filled with these errors as show bellow. This instance occurs on two different computers, one of them, has the same problem with running as OP (AMN suddenly doesn't open after close), re-installation helps, but nevertheless, something is not right there. I'm using Win10 x64/20h2.

It looks like an issue with loading Skin configuration - the configuration file is missing. Indeed, in this case the reinstallation helps. IMHO, it signals about some sort of disk error on your computer (AllMyNotes itself never deletes nor modifies skin config files). It may be result of incorrect computer shutdown but better to be cautious and check your drives for errors and using Chkdsk utility. Also, check Smart status of your disk using this command line command: "wmic diskdrive get status"

I tried a few backup databases, tried deleting the ini file - no joy

The last time I used it was 10 days ago

Between then and now this windows update was done (no idea if it is relevant)

My impression: this is likely caused by Windows update. Majority of users have survived this update without any issues, but, likely, it depends from system configuration. In the past we had similar issue reports which is likely linked to Windows update too - on update some file access permissions where broken, so was needed to reinstall the software. It has no impact on data file accessibility, as it primary affects the skin file, therefore enough to reinstall the software, to restore the skin file, or, to restore the access to it for the program.

I made an account to comment on this. I've been experiencing this problem, or a similar one, for a few months, intermittently.

AMNO is set to start on boot, so when I log in I'm usually presented with it prompting me to enter my password for my notes file. However, many times it didn't open, and rather a screen informing there was an error opening it appeared. I clicked OK, then after a few seconds the same window appeared. I clicked OK again, and it didn't come back. However, trying to open AMNO manually triggered the same error window. So the only way to run it was to reboot the machine, sometimes twice.

I noticed two things:

The first is that, when this happens, the executable C:\Program Files (x86)\AllMyNotes Organizer\AllMyNotes.exe becomes undeletable. Trying to delete it, even on a Windows Explorer with Administrator rights, causes Windows to inform the file cannot be deleted because it's in use by AllMyNotes.exe, even though I can see in Task Manager that no AllMyNotes.exe process is running. This is weird, to say the least.

The second thing I noticed were those strange random noises in allmynotes.log mentioned above. Pages upon pages of weird characters.

So, I don't think this is an error related to any specific Windows update, but something else.

Maybe AMNO is opening skin files in read-and-write mode, rather than in read-only mode, and some runaway routine is causing the "write" operation to happen when it shouldn't? Or maybe it isn't failing back into a graceful state when it cannot read a faulty skin, and is dumping random contents read from a pointer that should be pointing to a string but ends up pointing to some other memory location? Maybe both things, as in, it's corrupting the skin config file, and then writing down a corrupted log? Or maybe the log file isn't being closed properly upon crash, so Windows believe the full sector/cluster belongs to the file, and is showing the random contents that was in that disk sector? Or something else altogether?

I'm attaching two screenshots. The first shows the beginning of one such string of random noise. The second shows normal logging resuming after I uninstalled AMNO, rebooted, manually deleted the AllMyNotes.exe file which the uninstaller couldn't delete, then reinstalled it and ran it again. I'm not sending the full log file because that random noise might not be truly random and contain sensitive information, so I think it better not to send it in full. But I can say it's four or five pages of the random characters until normal logging resumes.

I think it'd be a good idea to add some extra sanity checks on the skin reading and log writing routines. Whatever the problem is, it seems to happen in the space between trying to read a skin, failing, and writing a log about the failure. Maybe that'll help figure out the true cause.

An update. Yesterday I completely uninstalled AMNO, and used it normally, so that all of its files, skin included, were fresh. At night I turned my computer down. Now I turned my computer on, and the error happened again. There was no Windows update in between.

The attachments show additional details:

[*] The log, anonymized. It shows AMNO running fine yesterday (although with some tiny random characters at the 17:25:26 mark), then breaking up today with a huge amount of random characters at the end. I kept the first three lines of the ending noise, but it ran for 14 more pages, for a total log file size of 129kB;
[*] The Holy Crown SkinInfo file, which doesn't seem to be corrupted;
[*] The error screens that appear when I log in, and then whenever I try to run AMNO manually;
[*] What happens if I try to delete AllMyNotes.exe after this error happens, with Windows informing the file is open by AllMyNotes.exe itself, even though Task Managers shows no AllMyNotes.exe process running;

Thank you for all the logs/screen/details. It looks the log file shows where the issue is. We'll look in to it on this week, and, hopefully, fix it.
