Info Select transplant issues/requests/needs

Postposted Flyarbox » May 26th, 2012, 7:59 pm

I bought AllMyNotes Deluxe recently. I'm examining it as a potential replacement for Info Select which I have been using for at least 22 years. I'm considering migrating because after 22 years of a continuously improving application, Info Select has curiously gone off into the weeds with the most recent version, version 10. From fabulous to unusable in a single step. The need to look for an alternative is mostly driven by the fact that my existing version (9) may not function entirely properly with Windows 7 and 8. Aside from these issues, I'm quite happy with the version I have.

So my focus is almost entirely centered around replicating the functionality I already have in Info Select but in an application that is healthy and vigorous and actively moving forward. I use only a small fraction of Info Select features so I'm hoping this won't be too difficult. For the most part, searching and note navigation is all I do with Info Select. All note organizational capabilities are homegrown through a very simple expedient of an organized collection of "keywords" embedded in each note, something AllMyNotes already does quite well.

I have noticed that many of the keystroke sequences are the same for AllMyNotes as they are in Info Select; this is very convenient. Thank you. This couldn't possibly have been an accident, although I did find it very pleasantly surprising.

I have already imported all of my data from Info Select into AllMyNotes; as far as I can tell so far the importation went flawlessly. The appearance of the data is markedly different due to philosophical formatting differences between the applications, but reasonably acceptable. Hyperlinks to websites do not stand out sufficiently in AllMyNotes in my opinion; I hope to find a way to fix that. Having to hold down the control key for an Internet link is an annoyance but survivable.

What follows is what I perceive to be the list of missing functionality that I enjoy in Info Select but which is either missing or I haven't figured out how to do in AllMyNotes.

1. Global Search is fairly close to what I'm accustomed to already but it does not seem to highlight ALL search terms in a note simultaneously but only one at a time. If a search term exists 5 times in a note, then it should be highlighted 5 times when you select that note in the left-hand pane tree view (assuming that it's physically possible to see all 5 instances on a single screen full of information and that some of the instances aren't out of sight below screen visibility). One can more or less accomplish the same thing by clicking within the note and hitting F3, which turns on highlighting for all items matching the search criteria within the note (and which leaves the highlighting on WHILE editing within the note; this is actually significantly BETTER than what Info Select does, which turns the highlighting off when you click within the note; good job AllMyNotes!). Simply highlight all the search terms within a note AT ALL TIMES when filtering is on (whether the note is simply selected in the tree view or one has actually gone into edit the note) would be far better in my opinion.

1a. The F3 key only cycles through all of the Global Search hits within an individual note and rings the bell when you've come to the end of the list of hits. In Info Select, F3 goes to the list of hits in an individual note and when it comes to the end it jumps to the next note and goes to the 1st hit in that and then goes on from there. This is much more efficient than having to jump from note to note in the left-hand tree view pane by hand in between collections of F3 presses. It allows one to rifle through dozens of hits in a multiplicity of notes in a matter of seconds which the F3 facility in AllMyNotes does NOT permit.

2. There seems to be no facility for keeping a single click collection of high-traffic notes. In Info Select, along the bottom edge of the right-hand note pane, one can quickly and easily add and remove tabs that will. Each tab is a "context" consisting of the collection of notes that were visible, and which particular one was selected, when the tab was created or last accessed. In AllMyNotes parlance, this would be the "filtered" collection of notes visible immediately following a Global Search with filtering turned on. If a particular tab is selected and you pick a different note from the left-hand pane tree view, then that note remains associated with that tab. If a particular tab is selected and you change the global search and filter, then THAT becomes the set of information associated with that tab (hence the name "context"). In other words, the tabs are always "live". Whatever searching and filtering you do when a particular tab is selected becomes the "state" of that tab. If you leave and go to a different tab and return, that state is returned to upon selecting that tab again. I use this in a real estate context: I may have 500 customers in my database but I only have 4 or 5 transactions going at once at most, and each of those ongoing transactions is associated with a tab, always available with a single click.

3. The Global Search facility in AllMyNotes lacks Info Select's elegance and efficiency. Info select keeps a list of the most recent searches as a drop-down of the search box. Simply typing somewhere between a single to a few characters (sufficient to differentiate a search term from the other search terms) and hitting down-arrow allows you to quickly jump to any recently used search term. Repeatedly hitting the down arrow jumps to the next item in the list that matches the text you entered as a differentiator. This facility prevents one from having to endlessly re-type commonly or repetitively used search terms.

Clipboard Image (41).jpg (198.51 KiB) Viewed 5836 times

4. Info Select's version of Global Search FAR exceeds AllMyNotes search capabilities. While some of the functionality of Info Select's refined searching capabilities can be replicated by insightful use of wildcards and other symbols, as the attached capture of the Info Select search box suggests, a far greater degree of searching refinement can be achieved when desired in Info Select. As an example, finding the collection of notes that have date stamps in a particular date range, or before or after a particular date is no problem with Info Select; as far as I have been able to determine, AllMyNotes isn't capable of doing this at all. Searching by text color, font types, through multiple data files, and so on are but an additional few of the search refinements completely unavailable within AllMyNotes as far as I can tell.

The nature of this post is to complain about the things that I use all day every day within Info Select without which I would be crippled in a move to AllMyNotes. Perforce it doesn't list all of the interesting features that AllMyNotes DOES have that Info Select DOES NOT. The ability to add an alarm at any point within any note is simply inspired, as an example. Unfortunately, this little piece of genius is paired with having neglected to have a list of all the alarms that are seeded out there in the database (at least not that I can find). OOOooppps. A list showing all the alarms that are out there with the ones that have gone off highlighted is clearly needed and I'm betting will see that before too long; it may even already be there and I just haven't found it. I can only find a list of the alarms that have gone off. Peculiarly, AllMyNotes seems to allow you to delete the icon of the alarm out of the note while leaving the visually deleted alarm in the list of triggered alarms. I would consider that a bug.

All in all, these are very few complaints which was extremely surprising to me. I thought there'd be many more. If I had to select any particular thing as a great weakness of AllMyNotes, it would be the weakness of the overall search engine mechanism relative to Info Select.

I feel a little guilty for what I've only paid...

Unfortunately, after being accustomed to these facilities for about 22 years, my habits have achieved an extremely elevated level of refinement that depend on these capabilities past a completely conscious level. My fingers seem to know to do these things without my active mental participation. I can relearn habits, but the capabilities themselves in do need to be there in one form or another for AllMyNotes to be a viable option for me. While the needs are very few, they're pretty much cast in concrete. While I could get along without the full range of Info Select search varieties, the absence of a powerful date stamp search facility is probably a dealbreaker for me.

Best regards.

So...

Did I do something wrong by posting my questions/issues to the Feature Requests part of the forum? Not a whisper in response in two days. Should I have posted this elsewhere?

Hi Steve,

Thank you for writing! And please sorry for delay with your reply - over weekend I was away from my desk :)

Flyarbox wrote:I have noticed that many of the keystroke sequences are the same for AllMyNotes as they are in Info Select; this is very convenient.

This is because I'm the developer of Info Select for Palm, and for Windows (it was version 6, back in 1998), and I couldn't live without these keyboard shortcuts in AllMyNotes Organizer either. Same as you, I was using only small fraction of IS in my daily life, but couldn't live without them :)

Indeed, IS has powerful search features, and, we'll improve our search soon. Thank you for so detailed comparison, glad you like AllMyNotes, and from our end, we'll do our best to improve it, we are working on it daily.

P.S. Please sorry for short reply from my end - honestly speaking, I'll need some more time to carefully read your posting, as I'm bit overloaded with other tasks.
P.P.S. Thank you for supporting our work by purchasing Deluxe edition!

Thanks for the reply. I was more expecting a response from other forum members over the weekend, no so much the developer HIMSELF. Hope it didn't sound like I was grousing about you getting the weekend off.

So...

Any of these things addressed by the upcoming release?

Best regards.

Steve

P.S.(Odd...the line "I feel a little guilty for what I've only paid..." seems...different from how I remember it.)

It looks like majority our forum members are users that are visiting the forum when they need assistance, while the idea to assist others is not that frequent, though, chances are... :)

After all, is normal, cause it's only me, the developer, who is able to address majority of these issues.

Yet cannot say exactly, as we are working on version 3 beta, need to finish number of other features we are working on... The first thing I'd like to do is the list of recent searches, and then we'll see... honestly, I still had no time to read all your posting

Steve & Vlad,

I too have been a long-time user of Info Select, and have switched over to the wonderful AllMyNotes program. But I do miss the advanced searching capabilities of IS. Another slight problem is that my imported IS notes seem to have bunches of alarms in them! These are not intentional alarms, but something in my IS notes gets interpreted as an alarm.

So my request would be to please get a way to delete all my alarms, so I can start over.

Thanks to you all,
Ben

Usually alarms are created on place of so-called "ticklers", which is IS's equivalent of alarms in AllMyNotes. I presume in some cases alarms can be recognized mistakenly out of dates, but even if so, I guess it's kind of ok if you'll be notified on entered dates... Yet the simplest way to got rid of these alarms is to delete alarm objects (alarm icons) in your texts. In case if there is too many, contact me personally using this link, I can do a special app build for you which will not create all these alarms so you can start importing over.

Steve & Vlad:

I totally agree with everything Steve has said about the need to have Info Select's refined searching abilities. I have been using Info Select for about 13 or 14 years and the most important feature for me is the lightning fast search, along with all of the different ways of refining the search. Also, the context tabs are extraordinarily useful, and I have great hopes that these features could be implemented in AllMyNotes.

Thanks a lot for an awesome product!

Hi,

I also am a long time user of IS, since its dos version in fact, and I love it. I also considered migrating to AllMyNotes though I am not at all impressed by the "candy like" design of the application. But I did not even gave a try to AlllMyNotes for this main and important reason:

In my Info Select, I have tons of notes containing screen captures, most of them anotated with my scn capture application. I am a developper, and every time I solve, say a tool configuration problem, I capture a picture of a window or a parameter dialog box. The import function of AllMyNotes does not support importing the images contained in the notes, as the AllMyNotes support told me. And I definitely stop considering migrating to this app after the support guy told me I only had to cut / past manually the images for each imported note. Such a silly advice for tons of notes which, for a lot of them, contain multiple images !

So, I sticked with my Info $elect 2007 I am using with no problem on my Windows 8.1 x64 laptop. Just don't know if my old IS would behave right in Windows 10. For this reason, I am reluctant to upgrade to Windows 10 !

My greatest dream would be that Miclog releases an up-t-date version of Info Select !

There is a way to import these notes - via copy-paste. I know, it takes time, perhaps you'll have to spend whole hour by doing dumb copy-paste operation. But try to think about it this way - the upgrade price for InfoSelect is pretty high, while after importing data to AllMyNotes you'll save quite a lot of money. Doesn't this money of dumb work cost that price?

I agree, I would love to see more search options, especially "Next" and "Prev". But even more, a search and replace function.
Thanks, the program is so useful!!

As a a longtime Tornado Notes/ISW user, I have similar search wishes to Steve's. Nevertheless, I'm a solid convert to AMN now, and praise the day I switched to it!.

Still, I liked ISW's "one or more words" search option. It always seemed to find what I wanted.

I find the Boolean search option in AMN odd. I'm used to "horse AND zebra", not "+horse +zebra". And the "How to use" notes don't really discuss "OR", I.e. horse OR zebra". (Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, ISW's "one or more words" search template is probably an "AND/OR" -based logical search.) Last, on search options, I recommend X1 Search's super useful "NEAR" search option. (X1 Search is a desktop search program). A search for "Sally NEAR contract" would find any note with the word "Sally" 10 or fewer words away from the word "contract". Please consider this useful search option for AMN.

In ISW, I liked that, after I searched for something, I could just hit Enter to see the entire list of filtered search results. Almost always, the search I wanted was one of the notes visible on my screen. Now, I need to move my hand from the keyboard, find my mouse and click the note I'm looking for on the large list produced by AMN's search. Or, I need to move my hand to actively click in yet another spot to view all available filtered searches. All this is fiddly and time consuming. Net, in AMN, I wish that, by simply pressing Enter after a search, I could immediately display as much of the Filtered list as can fit on my screen as notes.

I've studied the "Help" articles in AMN. They are very helpful, with one exception: "How Search in All Notes and Folders". It includes a line that likely could respond to some of my above frustrations. It says: "Now you can either Go To needed Note/Folder by pressing Go To button, or, you can Filter found items, to see only Global Search result in Outliner tree by pressing Filter button." What button is the "Go to" button? It isn't cited on the separate keyboard shortcut page. Neither is the "Filter button" defined there. (BTW, I run a web business with a FAQ and, every time I look at it, there's always something I wish I hadn't written the way I did! So, no criticism here!)

Overall, I think AMN is great in almost every way!

I have been an InfoSelect user since the Tornado (DOS) days. I would very much like to migrate to AllMyNotes but must find a way to import the HUNDREDS of notes into AMN. You mentioned, "I have already imported all of my data from Info Select into AllMyNotes; as far as I can tell so far the importation went flawlessly." and I would very much appreciate it if you could give me direction on how that is accomplished! I actually run two InfoSelect programs simultaneously because I like some of the features of each version. It would be such a blessing to be able to bring all my existing notes into AMN and say good bye to ISW forever. Any direction or assistance you could give would be most appreciated!! I cannot save each note to a .txt file and then import it into AMN, at 73, I will not live that long. ;-) Thanks in advance for your help. LAH

IS can export ALL your notes in to .txt, and AllMyNotes can export these files and correctly break them by documents. Please read the manual for AllMyNotes, there we have a topic related to IS -> AMN batch data import/export.

Thank you for your response, Vlad. I have actually discussed this with you before, and since I have literally thousands of notes in InfoSelect, exporting them to a .txt file and importing each one is not feasible. I will keep hoping that some tech guru will create an import/export file for the entire IS note database/s. I do understand that the .wd / .wd2 (etc.) files are no doubt proprietary, but surely there must be some workaround other than the afore mentioned .txt alternative. LAH

It appears to me you got it wrong. Import.export is an automated batch operation: exported .txt file contains _all_ notes, and AllMyNotes can split them all to individual notes automatically per single import operation. Rather than guessing you better give it a trial to see it works for you.

InfoSelect can export only plain text. And we cannot read .wdX files directly as these files are proprietary and have different format for nearly every single minor update of IS. So at present moment we cannot do it, as well as no one else. To my knowledge AllMyNotes is the only software title which can import data exported from Info Select.

At the same time you are still able to import formatting via clipboard. It takes a while, but it appears to me it it's still reasonable choice - you can use batch import to import plain text, and then, copy-paste formatted notes manually. I bet not 100% formatted. In my case, long ago, when we had no automated batch import, I had to import data using copy-paste. It took me 2 hours to copy-paste my 400+ notes, but it was worth it.

I have been using info select since day one. (Tornado 1.0). Every version of info select was better than the previous version, until they went to version 10 and 11. It is the Windows 8 version. Many steps backwards. They broke many great features and it is terribly slow now.
All My Notes looks like a great substitute if you are starting from the beginning.
I have over 45,000 notes. Most with graphics, charts, spreadsheets, etc.
I would instantly be a loyal member of all my notes if there was some way to import data (other than copy/past of 40,000+ times)
Looks like a great program except for the import feature (text-only).
another VERY handy thing is to search/replace with \r & \r (Returns and Tabs)
