I have two copies/licenses (currently using 2.57).One installed on a desktop PC and one on a laptop.

They both access the same data file on a shared drive.

Currently if AllMyNotes is open on one computer, the other can not access the datafile (an error message is displayed)

It would be nice if the second computer could access that datafile in Read-Only mode.

You can use a built-in synchronization, which is available in version 3 (beta). You'll need to create a "central" database, and configure your PC and laptop to sync with it using Tools -> Data Sharing menu item.

Note: data sharing (sync) feature is currently in beta-testing stage, therefore be advised, it's not tested properly, make sure to backup your data before using it.

I would also like to be able to open a read only version of my AllMyNotes database. Similar to RWiggy I have a couple of computers, one a desktop and the other a laptop accessing AllMyNotes on a shared drive. Ideally I would like both computers to be able to update the same database and syncronize automatically but I know this will have to wait until the synronization feature has been completed. However, the ability to have one computer accessing my database in update mode and one or more computers accessing the same database in read only mode would be helpful as a stopgap in the meantime. Is there any way you would be able to implement this in the short term? I'm pretty sure other customers would find this useful.

I've been using 3.04 beta for syncronization. However, the "slave" database doesn't syncronize properly. In fact the slave database only seems to contain an empty recycle bin folder plus an empty copy of one of my folders. My current database is 1.32 MB with 345 notes across 25 folders so there is a lot missing!! I can't send you a copy of my database since it contains all my addresses, passwords etc. Obviously I'm doing something wrong so maybe you could publish a step by step description for using syncronization?

Ian, I get the same with sync.... I think we'll just have to wait until the feature has been further refined... I am not so sure its user error.. :-)

Just installed 3.06 BETA and tried syncronising using a local drive again but I'm still having problems. What I did was use my current AMN DDB as my master with a new DDB as the slave. Specified one of the folders from my master in the new DDB and tried to sync. However, this didn't appear to work, simply got a couple of empy folders.

Has anyone got sync. to work, even partially?

OK, please sorry for the moment of silence from my end. Today we've updated beta version - released version 3.07, which will be able to synchronize much better. I guess from this point you are welcome to give it a spin, I do believe it should work for majority of cases. There is still one thing that may seem strange - no error reporting (in case if such are happening), sync errors currently are saved in the allmynotes.log file, soon we'll improve that.

Sorry Vlad, been away on holiday for a couple of weeks and just got back.

I've just given this a very quick and very basic test, which worked!! I know several others are very interested in syncronisation so I've provided a quick summary of what I did:

- Created a test database with two folders. One folder which I wanted to sync. which had 4 notes. Another folder which I didn't want to sync. which had 3 notes.

- Created the central database using your instructions.

- Did a sync. from the test database which then populated the central database with the 4 notes.

- Created a second test database with a folder to sync. with using your instructions. Did a sync. and this populated the second test database with the 4 notes from the central database.

- Then added a fifth note to the second test database and did another sync. which populated the central database with the fifth note.

- Then did a sync. from my first test database which populated this with the fifth note.

- So now I have three databases (first test, second test and central) with the same contents.

I'll need to do far more testing before I use this with my real database but this is very encouraging. Good work - but it has been a long time coming, ;) . I was on the verge of looking for another product but was reluctant since I like AllMyNotes so much.

Anyway, I'll let you know if I hit any problems with my more detailed testing if that's OK.

PS Thanks for including the instructions on how to configure / perform sync. I doubt I would have worked out what to do without these.

Ian, was this central database on the same computer as the initial test datatbase above?

...and this 2nd test database, was it on a 2nd or 3rd computer...? or again just tests you made all on the same computer but in separate Windows Subdirectories....? Did a sync. and this populated the second test database with the 4 notes from the central database.

PS Thanks for including the instructions on how to configure / perform sync. I doubt I would have worked out what to do without these. am looking for these instructions, have followed the ones in the manual, but perhaps they are not precise enough, or am just making mistakes... Billy
