How Do I Import Many RTF Documents at once?

Hi, Vlad! I'm new to AllMyNotes and I'm very grateful for your having written such excellent software!

I have a simple question -- please forgive me if this question has already been addressed, but I couldn't find it so far. Is there some easy way that I can import about 1,000 documents with one operation (they are in .rtf format)? I would like each document to become one note in AllMyNotes (retaining all of their formatting contained in the .rtf documents). I tried through the "import" option to select all of the documents at once and import them, but AllMyNotes simply did nothing (not even an error message). Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you very much for your help! Greg

Must be working through Import... First of all, please make sure that you are using the most recent version (currently 2.52), also you may try:

1. Try to import smaller amount of files.

2. Try to drag&drop .rtf files from Explorer to hierarchy tree in AllMyNotes.

One of above must work. Let me know otherwise.

Re: How Do I Import Many RTF Documents at once?

Hi Vlad,

Thanks for your quick response!

However, I tried both suggestions and here's what happened:

1) When using the drag&drop method (dragging rtf doc from Windows Explorer directly to AMN's Hierarchy Tree), a new note is created with a link inside the note (or file address to the document like C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\filename ...) but not the actual rtf document contents itself.

2) When importing more than one rtf document into AllMyNotes, I discovered that AMN will only take a small number of documents at a time: the limitation seems to be on the total number of characters included in the string of file names. I found that if the file names are relatively short, I have been able to import 4 or even 5 files at a time. But, when the file names are very lengthy, I can only import 2 or perhaps 3 files simultaneously. Could this be fixed such that I could select all of the files in a particular folder and AMN would simply go right through that whole list importing all of them, each one into its own note in AMN? (Otherwise, trying to import 1,000 files or more becomes extremely tedious).

3) Also, I noticed that when importing rtf documents, AMN gives the resulting note a title or caption taken from the first line in the document (and if the first line happens to be a black line, then the caption is "..". Could you include an option allowing the user to specify whether the newly imported document takes its name from the actual name of the rtf document or from the first line of the document contents?

Thanks a lot for all your great work!

Greg

Ok, it looks like I was wrong indeed, drag&drop wasn't working correctly. Had to fix it ;)

Please give a try to build #480 below:

http://downloads.vladonai.com/Install_AllMyNotes_2_52_b480.exe

It will allow drag&drop files from Explorer to hierarchy tree.

Supported file formats: html, rtf, txt, knt, enex, csv, gif, jpeg, bmp.

Unsupported files will be inserted as file attachments.

Let me know if you'll observe something.

Vlad,

Thank you very much! Your fix worked! Now I can import 1,000 rtf documents with no problem by dragging them to the hierarchy tree.

Thanks again,

Greg
