Deleting duplicates.

I've ended up with many duplicates in my database. Is there an easy, quick way to delete duplicates?

Duplicates - thanks for flagging this. There isn't a dedicated "find and remove duplicates" tool in AllMyNotes right now, but it's a good one - I'm adding it to the feature request list for a future release. In the meantime, could you help me understand how these duplicates showed up? A couple of questions: Are the duplicate notes all sitting in the same folder, or are they scattered across different folders in your database? Are the duplicates exact, letter-for-letter copies, or are they slightly different versions of the same note (different edits, timestamps, etc.)? Do you recall anything that might have caused it - for example, importing the same file/folder twice, syncing the .ddb through a cloud service (like OneDrive or Dropbox) that could have created conflicting copies, or something else? Knowing the pattern will help us figure out both a quick workaround for you now and whether there's something in the sync/import flow we should fix on our end.

Response to questions

The duplicate notes are scattered across different folders in my database.
They would be slightly different versions having different timestamps, otherwise, they would be the same.
Yes, importing the same file has caused duplicates. The other cause is editing while tired.
Happy to give more information.

Soon.. It will be a Clean Up Wizard.

Thanks for the details, that was really helpful. Importing the same file twice is a common way for duplicates to creep in, and slightly different versions scattered across folders are exactly the case that’s hardest to clean up by hand.

Good news: we’re already working on this, and it will be bigger than a simple duplicate finder. Version 5.04 beta will include a Cleanup Wizard that lets you tidy up the whole database in one place:

  • Search for duplicates, with a number of options
  • Find and delete empty documents
  • Show your largest documents
  • Show your oldest and long-unused documents

I can’t give you an exact release date, but it is in progress, so please keep an eye out for 5.04.
